Attributes of God From A To Z: The Bread of Life

Updated: Feb 15, 2022

The third installment of the Attributes of God from A to Z is finally here. This post will be focusing on the name "The Bread of Life."

The name "Bread of Life" is used throughout the Bible to describe Jesus as the ultimate portion of life, the giver of spiritual sustenance-- nourishment that will never decay. This term is used over 21 times, in conjunction with the "I AM statements" where Jesus calls himself the bread of life, the gate, the shepherd, the light of the world, etc. The best parallel are the scriptures of Exodus 40 (where God instructs Moses to build a tabernacle as the Israelites were leaving Egypt on their way to the Promise Land of Bethlehem) and John 6, 8, and 10.

In Exodus 40, God instructs the Tabernacle to have the following:

  1. A table of showbread

  2. The Menorah

  3. A screen door

The order of precedence here is very prominent, later explained further in the Gospel of John.

  1. The table of show bread: "I Am the bread of life" John 6:35

  2. The Menorah: "I Am the Light" John 8:12

  3. A screen door: "I AM the Door" John 10:7

Jesus is explaining that He is the only way to salvation, the only source of spiritual sustenance, the only true light, and the only way to heaven.

Please see this video by a couple in Israel named Sergio and Rhoda (their YouTube channel is the same as their names) who work as guides to archaeological sites. They do a magnificent job pairing archeological sites with biblical and scientific evidence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fcUVe6S4vg.

Speak up for Those that Can't Speak for Themselves

Proverbs 31:8-9 states "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for those who are left without help. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." In places such as Cambodia, poverty strikes families to the core. They often will sell their children to keep their standard of living.
